Chichen Itza from Cancun - What You Need to Know
Drive Time
Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes from the Cancun Hotel Zone to Chichen Itza. The route follows Highway 180D (toll road) through the Yucatán state. Your guide accompanies you for the full journey — the drive is part of the tour experience, not dead time.
Pickup Time
Depending on your hotel's location in Cancun, pickup is between 7:00 AM and 8:15 AM. Hotels in the northern Hotel Zone (near Puerto Cancun) depart earlier; hotels in the south (near the airport) depart slightly later. Your exact pickup time is confirmed 24 hours before your tour.
Pickup Areas Covered
Cancun Hotel Zone (all km markers from 3.5 to 23), Cancun Centro (Avenida Tulum and surrounding streets), Puerto Cancun, Costa Mujeres, Playa Mujeres. If your hotel is not on our standard list, we assign the nearest convenient meeting point.
Arrival at Chichen Itza
Typically between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM from Cancun. This is ideal timing — early enough to be at the site before the largest tour bus waves, which arrive between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
Return Arrival in Cancun
Most guests return to their hotel between 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM depending on their hotel's location. Hotels in the north of the Hotel Zone return first; hotels in the south add approximately 30–45 minutes.
Toll Road vs Free Road
We use the Highway 180D toll road, which is faster, safer, and maintained to a higher standard than the free highway. Tolls are included in your tour price.

Departing from Cancun means the longest drive to Chichen Itza of our three departure cities — but it also means the earliest start, the most flexibility in pickup timing, and direct hotel-to-ruins service from the largest tourist hub in the Mexican Caribbean.
The Highway 180D drive passes through the Yucatán jungle, small colonial towns, and opens views across the flat limestone landscape of the peninsula. Your guide uses the journey to introduce Maya cosmology, explain the geography of the Yucatán, and answer questions before you arrive at the site. By the time you walk through the entrance gate, you already have a frame of reference for what you are about to see.
From Cancun, we typically arrive at Chichen Itza between 10:00 and 10:30 AM — before the mid-morning rush of tour buses that begin arriving at 11:00 AM from the Riviera Maya. This timing gives you the first 30–60 minutes at the site with noticeably smaller crowds.
